Bogotá, October 7, 2024 – With 15 days to go before the start of COP16, the most important event on biodiversity in the world, the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Susana Muhamad, presented the Colombia Pavilion, a space designed to promote reflection and dialogue on strategic biodiversity issues. This space will bring together government entities, civil society and cooperation partners.
“The Colombia Pavilion is the home of Colombia in the COP16 Blue Zone, where we will receive bilateral meetings, it has a meeting place in the form of a maloca for political discussion of the biodiversity situation. It will have more than 10 daily events, and we will also show not only the handicrafts, but also the culture of the country to all international delegations. It will really be the home of all delegations”, highlighted the Minister of Environment and incoming president of COP16, Susana Muhamad.
The Colombia Pavilion, located in the Blue Zone, will offer approximately 10 events daily, totaling nearly 120 throughout COP16, to foster dialogue on key issues for addressing biodiversity loss and conservation.
The Colombia Pavilion will offer approximately 10 events daily, totaling nearly 120 throughout COP16. Each day will include one-hour sessions where experts and participants can exchange ideas, reflect on current challenges and propose strategies that contribute to the fulfilment of the Kunming Global Framework Montreal.
This space will have an area of 18 x 20 square meters shaped maloca, a sacred space that not only connects with nature, but also invites us to deliberate on our ancestral legacy and care for our environment. It will also have a capacity for 60 people and will be set with traditional crafts of the country.
Colombia is committed to leading these discussions, strengthening its role as a reference in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The Pavilion is expected to become a key meeting point for knowledge generation and strategic alliances.
Location of the Colombia Pavilion
The Colombia Pavilion will be located in the Blue Zone, in the Valle del Pacífico Events Center, it is the space exclusively intended for conferences and high-level negotiations that will take place during COP16. This is the venue for all official meetings, side events and press conferences held during the COP.
This area is reserved for participants accredited by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), including official delegations, heads of state, admitted observers and the press.
"The Blue Zone is called so because there is raised the flag of the United Nations, it becomes an international stage. It is like moving the UN Assembly from New York to Cali, so that implies that the UN takes control of that territory, becomes international jurisdiction and is where negotiations between states will take place. There will be 27 pavilions, including the Colombia Pavilion, many events of all kinds, but mainly the negotiation of COP16", said Muhamad.
It will be 'the home of all delegations', stressed the Minister of Environment and incoming COP16 president.
To date, more than 15,000 people from official delegations, 12 heads of state, 103 ministers of the environment from all continents and the Secretary of the United Nations, António Guterres, have been confirmed.
