Bogotá, September 20, 2024 – The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development is conducting a citizen consultation on the Biodiversity Action Plan 2030 from today until September 28th. The purpose of this consultation is to receive suggestions for the implementation of the six goals that the country is committed to fulfill in the course of this and the next five years.
All Colombians will be able to access the COP16 website, consult the detailed document of the Biodiversity Action Plan and fill out the contribution form.
“We thank all sectors, levels and areas of the country involved in this process, which is of the whole government and society. Based on the dialogues developed and the contributions of more than 16,000 people, we defined country commitments and identified six very specific goals that Colombia will prioritize to achieve by 2030 and halt biodiversity loss, in line with the Kunming Montreal Global Framework. Now, the implementation of these goals will be consulted through this participation mechanism to close the updating process, present it at COP16 and start its execution”, said Mauricio Cabrera Leal, Vice Minister of Environmental Policies and Standardization of the Ministry of Environment.
This Biodiversity Action Plan will reflect the needs and priorities of the regions to strengthen biodiversity management, meet Colombia's commitments as part of the Convention on Biological Diversity and achieve the 23 targets established in the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework by 2030.
Goals of the Colombian Biodiversity Action Plan
Goal 1: Participatory planning
By 2030, at least 19 million hectares with loss of ecological integrity in continental and marine-coastal territories will be included in a participatory manner as determinants of land use planning with biodiversity and climate adaptation criteria, in planning instruments for decision making in land management.
Goal 2: Territories with ecosystemic integrity and regenerative models
By 2030, Colombia will have five million hectares converted to sustainable production models and with multifunctional restoration processes that guarantee the recovery of ecosystem functionality and the dynamization of territorial economies.
Goal 3: Enhance the biodiversity economy
By 2030, it will contribute 3% of the national GDP and generate 522,000 jobs through biodiversity economy models that guarantee sustainable productive alternatives based on knowledge and technological innovation to generate added value.
Goal 4: Addressing informality and containing crime
By 2030, 50% of the cases of environmental liabilities will be managed through mechanisms focused on their remediation. Likewise, at least 50% of the products derived from biodiversity will be legally and sustainably obtained, marketed and used in municipalities of high biodiversity importance.
Goal 5: Governance of all sectors and society as a whole
By 2030, Colombia will have achieved 34% of the conservation and management of terrestrial, inland water and coastal marine areas, through systems of protected areas, OMECs and indigenous, Afro-descendant and peasant territories, consolidating ethnic territorial rights, as well as measures to protect environmental defenders.
Goal 6: Sustainable financial models
By 2030, Colombia will have implemented sustainable financing models that mobilize resources from all sources and in the long term, ensuring transformational impacts in the territories through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in co-responsibility and under effective and equitable governance.
